Luncheon on the Grass
A picnic in the forest of Fontainebleau.
What
Fashionable Parisians gather for a picnic in the woods, the cloth spread with a pie, fruit and bottles of wine.
Why
Monet planned a vast canvas of this picnic for the Salon; the great canvas was later cut apart, and this study survives whole.
Notice
The bottles waiting in the shade by the cloth.
“Modern life begins with lunch outdoors.”
