The King Drinks
Twelfth Night, and the king raises his glass.
What
An Epiphany feast: whoever found the bean in the cake is crowned for the night, and the whole table roars as he lifts his glass.
Why
Jordaens painted the Flemish Twelfth Night again and again, a court ceremony staged around a family table.
Notice
The paper crown, and the guests shouting the toast that gives the picture its name.
“Every feast needs a king, if only until morning.”
