Still Life with a Drinking-Horn

The archers’ horn, filled for the table.

What

The silver-mounted drinking horn of Amsterdam’s guild of archers, with a lobster, glasses and a lemon on a Turkish carpet.

Why

The horn itself survives in Amsterdam; Kalf painted a civic treasure as if it had been brought out for supper.

Notice

The light caught in the glass of wine, held just behind the horn.

“A city’s pride, set out for a single meal.”
