The Merry Fiddler
A musician leaning out of the window.
What
A fiddler in a plumed hat leans over a ledge, glass of wine raised, as if calling us to join him.
Why
Honthorst brought Caravaggio’s light from Rome to Utrecht and later painted for the courts of England and Denmark.
Notice
The glass held out across the ledge, almost into our room.
“The party is always on the other side of the window.”
