The Supper at Emmaus
The supper that stopped mid-blessing.
What
At an inn table laid with bread, a roast fowl, a carafe of wine and a basket of fruit, two disciples recognise the man who has joined them.
Why
Painted in 1601 for Ciriaco Mattei in Rome, it is among the great dinner tables of the Baroque.
Notice
The fruit basket balanced over the table’s edge, ready to fall into the room.
“The table is where recognition happens.”
