The Bacchanal of the Andrians
An island where the river ran with wine.
What
The people of Andros, whose island river Bacchus turned to wine, drink, dance and sleep through a golden afternoon.
Why
Titian painted it for Alfonso d’Este’s private study in Ferrara; in 1638 it passed to Philip IV, and it has belonged to the Spanish royal collection since.
Notice
The sheet of music in the foreground carries a French canon: whoever drinks and does not drink again does not know what drinking is.
“A royal picture with one rule for the cellar: pour again.”
