The Triumph of Pan

Painted for a cardinal’s château.

What

A wild procession of nymphs, satyrs and fauns garlands a herm of Pan, with masks and wine vessels strewn on the ground.

Why

Cardinal Richelieu commissioned it for his château at Richelieu, one of a set of bacchanals that dressed the first minister of France in antiquity.

Notice

The still life in the foreground: theatre masks and vessels dropped mid-revel.

“A first minister’s idea of pleasure: wild, and perfectly composed.”
