The Feast of the Gods
Olympus at a picnic in the woods.
What
The gods of antiquity at a woodland feast, served wine by satyrs and nymphs beneath the trees.
Why
Bellini signed it in 1514 for Alfonso d’Este; years later Titian repainted the hills and trees behind them so it could hang beside his own bacchanals in the same room.
Notice
Two hands in one canvas: Bellini’s calm figures in front, Titian’s darker, wilder hill behind them.
“The first great banquet of the Renaissance, finished by the painter who came next.”
